on a night in october 1996 a young french citizen proposed the makers of the legendary mojo club to open a chillout event. this event took place once a month and became one of the most successful and beloved club nights in hamburg and an even internationally well-known chillout event. over the years, his founder and resident dj, soundpilot raphaël marionneau has been considered to be one of the most creative persons of the hanseatic metropolis and a leading chillout dj in germany.

from 1996 to 2003, raphaël marionneau invited to have a relaxing evening in a room installation with comfortable couches, visual installations, its famous tea for free and the unique music. "le café abstrait" was a unique place for static journeys, a living-room for relaxation.

one wednesday in the month at mojo club in hamburg, this french chillout club had a special blend, another approach to music and a concept: the couch culture. the music and the location had got the key role during the event: a room installation with comfortable couches, tea for free, slide shows and abstract lights created a relaxing atmosphere to the visitor, redesigned every month transformed the mojo club to a big living-room.

the music, a mix between ambient, trip-hop, electronic, classical and downbeats called the french chill-out has been created by raphaël marionneau. "le café abstrait" was at first an underground club during early years but became one of the most loved events in hamburg and an institution of the german club culture. it became an international renowmed club, thanks the release of the compilation series with the same name and a german tour in summer 2002. after more than 8 years of monthly couch culture at the mojo club, "le café abstrait" stopped when the legendary dancefloor jazz club closed its doors in april 2003.

"le café abstrait" at "café del mar" on the 27.06 and german tour. release of the third album.

02/03.05: "2 nights of le café abstrait", the finale event at mojo club. 12 local djs celebrate the french chillout club with 800 guests.

2006
"le café abstrait 10 years" on 16.11 and 17.11 at the mandarin kasino. release of the 5th album and a dvd.

2009

Sehnsucht nach Entspannung und Geselligkeit haben Menschen jeden Alters. Bei den Jüngeren heißt es neudeutsch einfach "Chill Out" und erfreut sich wachsender Beliebtheit. Im Hamburger Mojo-Club wartet seit fünf Jahren jeden ersten Mittwoch im Monat eine riesige Schlange darauf, dass sich um 22 Uhr die Türen des Café Abstrait öffnen. Der französische DJ Raphaël Marionneau versammelt mit seinen elektronischen Klängen Menschen mit Teetassen auf dem Sofa, die ansonsten lieber auf der Tanzfläche die Nacht durchtanzen. Mittlerweile ist das Café Abstrait in ganz Deutschland bekannt. "Ich schaffe eine Atmosphäre, in der die Menschen sich zu ruhiger elektronischer Musik erholen können", sagt der Begründer der Couch-Kultur. "Der Lebensrhythmus vieler ist so stressig, dass sie die Ruhe und Geselligkeit im Café Abstrait einer Techno- oder House-Disco vorziehen." (2002)



seit fünf jahren ist das "le café abstrait" im mojo club synonym für entspannung und positiv akustische erfahrungen. jeden ersten mittwoch im monat: gewohntes bild am kiez, der verkehrsstrom am millerntor-hochhaus erlahmt, taxis hupen, nichts geht mehr. ein paar meter weiter, nur duch ein paar glasschieben getrennt, wartet ein andere welt. bei "le café abstrait" im mojo errinnert nichts an das alltäglich chaos: dia- und videoprojektionen tauchen den club in ruhiges licht. junge menschen entspannen sich bei "tea for free" auf weiche sofas während sie mit dem französichen dj raphaël marionneau auf eine akustische reise durch die facettenreiche welt elektonischer musik gehen. dub, deep house, trip-hop und soundtracks fusionieren miteinander und bilden die basis des mittlerweile legendären french chill-out sounds. mittlerweile ist das café der einzige mittwochs-club der stadt, der regelmäßig lange schlangen vorm eingang verspricht. der atmosphäre des "le café abstrait" hat der anstürm nicht geschadet: wer ein mal da war, kommt immer wieder. Es war ein Urknall. Er kam aus dem Nichts. Und veränderte alles. Vor zehn Jahren eröffnete Newcomer Raphael Marionneau das "Café Abstrait" im Mojo-Club. Er schleppte Sofas an, servierte Tee, spielte Klänge, die niemand kannte. Chill-Out, das Seele und Körper entspannte. Nicht nur das gelang. In Lichtgeschwindigkeit wurde der DJ zum Erfinder der "Couch Culture". Kontinuierlich wurden Galaxien erschlossen, alle unter der Marke Abstrait. "Der Begriff steht für das Surreale, eine andere Welt - und klingt einfach gut", erklärt der heute 33-Jährige. Er gründete sein Label, mixte CD's, die sich tausenfach verkauften und heute jede Sammlung wie das "Café del Mar" veredeln. Ein Stil, der nicht nur Frauen zum Träumen bringt. (2005)



einmal im monat verwandelt sich der mojo club fuer le café abstrait in ein modernes wohnzimmer mit weichen sofas, psychodelischen lichtern, abstrakten schwarzweiss dias und bizarren videos. im hintergrund laufen dazu sanfte elektronische klänge. tanzen tut hier niemand, den das wichtigste ist chillen.
